Science Tokyo high school students receive Best Research Award at Korea Science Academy Science Fair

August 20, 2025

Two students from Institute of Science Tokyo High School have received the Best Research Award at Korea Science Academy Science Fair (KSASF) 2025, held from July 1 to 4 at the Korea Science Academy of Korea Advanced Institute of Science and Technology (KAIST).

Yuki Chino, a 3rd-year Mechanical Systems Engineering student, and Atsuto Iwamoto, a 2nd-year Information Systems student, won the award for their “Study on the Circular Motion Convergence of CanSat During Descent Based on Flight Experiments.”

KSASF is a biennial contest during which high school students from around the world share their research through oral and poster presentations in the fields of mathematics, science, and technology. This year, the event included representatives of 28 schools from 17 countries and regions.

Exploring phenomenon only reproducible through flight experiments

Chino and Iwamoto are members of the Science Club, an official student club at Institute of Science Tokyo High School. For several years, the club has conducted research using a "CanSat" simulated satellite the size of a soda can, engaging in a range of activities such as the design and manufacturing of the aircraft, and flight experiments. At this year's KSASF, Chino and Iwamoto focused on an intriguing phenomenon discovered in 2015 that causes the troublesome circular motion of the CanSat to converge, and presented their analysis of sensor data from 26 flight experiments.

Comments from Chino and Iwamoto

It was tough to present the content of research that has continued for 10 years in English, especially in the short time of 15 minutes. However, discussing the content with friends from other participating countries and regions was an invaluable experience.

We were only able to continue our research activities thanks to the specialized equipment at our school, useful advice from friends and senior students, and cooperation by organizations during our 26 flight tests. We are grateful for their support. We hope to use this presentation experience in future activities and pass on our knowledge to younger students.
