Rowers from the Institute of Science Tokyo Rowing Club (Science and Engineering) have finished eighth in the men’s coxed four category at the 65th All Japan Rookie Championships, held from October 18 to 20 at the Toda Boat Course in Saitama Prefecture. This was the first time the team reached the top 8 at the competition since 2017.

The All Japan Rookie Championships is mainly for rowers with one to two years of experience in rowing. This year, a total of 28 teams from 25 high schools and universities from across Japan competed in the men's coxed four category.

The event was particularly significant for Science Tokyo rowers as it was the club’s first major accomplishment after the founding of the Institute on October 1, 2024. This strong result prepares the rowers nicely for the Five Universities’ Regatta and other bigger events in academic year 2025.

Coxed four

In this category, four rowers propel the boat with sweep oars, one oar per rower, while one cox steers the boat.

Comments from crew leader Okuda

I am very pleased with this eighth-place finish. This was my first time to compete as a crew leader in a rookie competition. I was helped by many people along the way, including seniors, new coaches, supervisors, managers, alumni, and other first-year crew members. We would not have been able to achieve this result without a team effort. As an older student in the team, I realized through this race that our achievements are possible only because of the support of many people. I will hold tight to this feeling, and will continue to work hard in both my club activities and studies.
