December 13, 2024

The Tokyo Tech* Rowing Club has finished second at the 47th East Japan Rookie Competition, held on September 28 and 29 at the Toda Boat Course in Saitama Prefecture. In addition to placing second in the men’s eight category, the team won the men’s category in the 20th Scull Competition, an event held on the same weekend as the East Japan Rookie Competition.

Men’s eight crew

The East Japan Rookie Competition brings together rowers in the East Japan area who are in their first or second year of competitive rowing. It includes eight different categories, including the prestigious men’s eight category. The Scull Competition is a single scull event for rowers of all levels, and includes both men’s and women’s categories.

This was the last competition in which rowers competed under the Tokyo Tech name before the merger between Tokyo Medical and Dental University (TMDU) and Tokyo Institute of Technology in October 2024. Rowers from TMDU also performed very well over the weekend, winning the men’s single scull category in the East Japan Rookie Competition and finishing second in the Scull Competition.

*The Tokyo Tech Rowing Club changed its name to the Institute of Science Tokyo Rowing Club (Science and Engineering) on October 1, 2024, following the establishment of Institute of Science Tokyo. The TMDU rowing club changed its name to the Institute of Science Tokyo Rowing Club (Medical and Dental Sciences).

Comments from crew leader
Yosuke Okuda

It was great fun to participate in the men’s eight together with the new first-year students. We will continue to do our best to balance our studies with our club activities.

Winner Taiji Koiwa
3rd year, Materials Science and Engineering

I am happy to finish my last competition for Tokyo Tech with a win. For this competition, I was able to practice by working backwards from my goal, and actually winning on the day greatly boosted my self-confidence. I will continue to devote myself to achieving greater results while balancing my rowing with my materials science studies.
