Double scull rowers 5th at Kansai Championship Regatta

August 15, 2025

Two members of the Science Tokyo Rowing Club (Medical & Dental Sciences) — Shugo Yachi (6th year, Medicine) and Ryu Yamaguchi (2nd year, Medicine) — have finished fifth in the men’s double scull category at the Kansai Championship Regatta, held on July 5 and 6 at the Osaka Prefectural Rowing Center in Takaishi City. This was the first time for the team to participate in this event.

The Kansai Championship Regatta includes athletes already in working life as well as strong university teams such as Nagoya University, which ranked seventh in last year's Japan University Rowing Championships. This year, Yachi and Yamaguchi finished third out of twenty university teams, losing only to Doshisha University by sixteen seconds and Nagoya University by three seconds.

The Science Tokyo Rowing Club (Medical and Dental Sciences), formerly the Tokyo Medical and Dental University (TMDU) Rowing Club, has a history of producing strong rowers such as Professor Emeriti Norimasa Kurosaki and Shiro Mataki, both of whom competed in the Olympic Games. In recent years, the club has continued to perform remarkably well. Medical student Ken Yanagihashi, for example, won awards in the men's single scull at the Japan University Rowing Championships for three consecutive years from 2014 to 2016.

The current team aims to train hard and win the men’s double scull at this year’s Japan University Rowing Championships, which kick off on September 3.

Comments from Yachi and Yamaguchi

We are very pleased to have finished third among the university teams in our first appearance in this contest. However, there is still room for improvement. We will work hard to improve significantly in the next two months and win a medal at the Japan University Rowing Championships.

We would like to thank everyone at the TMDU rowing alumni association, Meisui-kai, whose support made this trip to the Kansai Championship Regatta possible.
